Powering Compassionate Refuge in Port-au-Prince
In 2019, SELF completed a solar system installation at the College Marie Reine Immaculée in Port-au-Prince, a school and community center. In addition to being a Catholic school, it provides a compassionate refuge for homeless children, as well as a sewing room for the Peace Quilts project that gives women an opportunity to earn an income by making artistic quilts.
The solar project was designed to be sustainable to ensure that the solar system could generate enough money to maintain itself into perpetuity, while providing light and internet connection to the students and electricity for irons, lights, and sewing machines for the quilters. The revenue streams that made up the business plan were solar applications like charging stations for cell phones, water pumps for selling clean water, a computer café for communication, and refrigerators for selling cold drinks. This diverse and resilient approach ensures the project can continue to benefit more and more people moving forward.
SELF is a global leader in the fight against energy poverty. Since 1990, we’ve pioneered unique applications for solar energy, powering progress on food security, health care, education, gender equity, and more.
